Eating The World
By: Joe
Introduction
It all started after the war. The United States had somehow managed to create nuke grenades. It detonates like a normal grenade, but the explosion is over a hundred times bigger. Basically it is a nuke, stuffed inside a grenade, and the explosion power is brought down by like ten times. Anyways…. if you weren’t killed by the explosion, you’d be horribly mutated, and then die in a day or two from radiation poisoning. Somehow a couple of plants lasted for months. Most were flowers, and all that happened to them was that they got bigger and prettier, but a Venus Fly Trap was mutated too. It is now HUGE,compared to it’s normal size the size of a normal car. Also really recently they have been able to de-root themselves, get up, and walk around on their roots, then re-root themselves into the ground. Also they eat humans. They don’t come at you, but if you step on it’s roots, get in it’s way, try to harm it, or get too close to it will eat you. But for the beginning of the story I knew none of this.
The Beginning
It’s my Seventeenth Birthday!!! My name is Russell and here’s my story. So yeah this is my new journal Uncle Billy got me. The year is 2843, June 29th and it’s my Birthday. This will probably be the only time I put the date in, except for holidays and my Birthday. Sadly this Third World War has been going on for a little while and it doesn't want to end. I don’t know what else to say so I guess this is my first entry. Oh wait! I should desire what I look like! Okay, I am 5 foot 11, I have long, wavy, blond hair, and I have a casual tan. Also I live in Charlottesville, Virginia. So I guess that this is the real end to my first entry.
Five days after my birthday and I just finished opening my last presents for the 4th of July. I don’t have much to say today, but the President said that we are close to ending the war, because of these new bombs that the government won’t say anything about.
So two days after the announcement of the bomb a news team released that a handful of other governments had somehow managed to get the plans for the new bomb, and the news team did too! So they pulled a stupid move of explaining what the bomb did, and how it was made, so know any governments that didn’t have the bomb, now can make it, as well as any citizen anywhere can too! So apparently the bombs are actually grenades, and they are tiny nukes, not big bombs.
So Six days later everyone in the world had the grenades. It’s getting really scary to even walk around in the streets. Since the bomb making, no militaries have attacked one another, so there is some peace. Despite the peace people are wary of everything and everyone. The government is trying to hold us together, but everything is falling apart.
The first Military to Military fight with the grenades started today! It was The United States against China, inside China’s borders. The grenades work amazing, no one has actually used them before now. The work like a grenade but a bigger bomb, in a normal grenade sized package. No side effects have come up, but I predict that big problems will come up soon.
I was right! Three days after the first attack people began to realize things were wrong with them, and their pets and plants. Some people had already died from the radiation, and not from the explosion, and others had been mutated with another arm or leg or even a new part, like a tail, and are predicted to die soon from the radiation. Some house pets, and wild animals have had the same effects as humans. Plants are another story though. They all have died or withered away, but some plants could hold up from the radiation. They all got bigger, some prettier and others scarier. Lots of flowers survived, and they are the ones that got prettier. Trees also got bigger, and lets just say that Redwoods aren’t the tallest trees in the world anymore. Scarier? Yeah, that’s the Venus Fly Traps. They got A LOT larger, other than being big and scary, they haven’t had much to do harm us.
Two days. That’s all it took. Now the Venus Fly Traps eat HUMAN meat, not just bugs. I guess that being bigger does make you need to eat more. The news team thinks that the Venus Fly Traps have killed over a Hundred people. Luckily for us, the only place the grenades have been used were in China, South Africa, and Australia. The U.S has declared that they will not use the grenades in hope to stop the mutations, and to hope to prevent from having the grenades go off to kill United States citizens. However it is expected for all of the Eastern hemisphere to soon be infected with Venus Fly Traps everywhere.
Today Chile was attacked, with the grenades. So now every continent in the world (except for Antarctica, but no one cares about Antarctica) will soon be infected with these giant Venus Fly Traps. So I guess that soon the United States will have these plants in them soon also.
The president declared that we will have walls built on the entire land border between the U.S. and Mexico. She also decided that there will be a wall in between the U.S. and Canada, but only if Canada or the U.S. get the plants in their borders.
So today, the plants have been reported to be able to move. Not just like snapping at you or moving in the wind, but moving from place to place. They can do something called de-rooting. I think that’s when their roots come all the way out of the ground, but i’m not sure. Also they are supposed to be able to walk on their roots once they are out. So hopefully they won’t learn to climb up walls. But if they do I don’t know what will happen to the world.
Many governments have somewhat of the same plan of action that has been announced today. If the plants get out of hand in a specific region they will either firebomb the area, or bring in teams of soldiers with flamethrowers, no matter what the consequences are. Hopefully that type of action won’t be necessary, but most likely it will come to that.
Nothing much has happened for the past two weeks. More stories of death and destruction, but nothing new. That all changed today. Some plants got into Canada. We had a team build up a wall as fast as possible, but something bad happened. Somehow a plant seeds got over the wall. The president immediately firebombed the entire area with a 5 mile radius. But the fire bombs have been changed. They only target plant seeds or spores. I don't know how, but that’s how it is. Sadly in that area there probably won’t be that many plants in the near future because ALL seeds were destroyed, not just the Venus Flytrap's seeds.
I guess the fire didn’t get all of the seeds. Most of the Northern U.S. is infected with the plants now. Soon everywhere there will be plants. People haven’t gone crazy here yet,but in the cities with the fly traps everyone is crazy, and they are all looting, robbing, mugging, and murdering everything and everyone.
Our town is predicted to be infected in a few days. I want to leave, but my parents keep saying that no matter where we go the plants will be there or soon to be there. I told them we should go to Antarctica, but they don’t want to leave the place that they have lived in for over 20 years. Also they said that the plants will eventually get there to. I realize that no matter what I say they will never want to leave, ever. I might run away if the plants come too close to our town, I hope it never comes to that.
So it’s been about a week and people have been saying that they have seen these plants lurking in the trees. I really hope that they stay there, and don’t come any closer. People have already ran to any store around here, from Walmart to Gander Mountain, worried that something would happen to them. Most people have also caged themselves inside their houses, boarding up windows, covering every crack, and fixing everything, in hope to last a while in their houses.
Two days later our town was invaded. I stayed hunkering in bed, then I got up, looked out the window and I saw one. This is the first time I’ve seen one. I mean I heard descriptions and stories, but it did nothing to prepare me for what it was and looked like. It looked like it could easily crush me, and not even notice it. I got dressed, packed a bag full of clothes, food, water bottles, a lighter, my pocket knife, a watch with a compass on it, my journal with many pens, a flashlight, and a first aid kit, then I waited. I waited until I heard anything bad sounding. whether it being the house shifting, creaking, or if I heard a window crack and break.
One day full of worriment and boredom had passed. I made sure not to lose my pack, or to take anything out. I wasn’t too scared to go downstairs, so I had a normal weekend day. Weirdly I had completely forgotten about my parents all of yesterday. Soon I’m going to go to their room downstairs and see if they are okay.
OH MY GOD! I HAVEN'T STOPPED RUNNING FOR WHAT FEELS LIKE HOURS! Calm yourself Russell. Okay. So here’s what happened: I grabbed my bag, left my room and went to the ground level. I grabbed a cup of water, and a chicken leg, then went downstairs. I realized immediately that there was an awful smell, and just guessed that it was my dad who forgot to flush the toilet. When I got to the bottom of the stairs the smell got worse, and there were tiny green things coming out of the bottom of my parent’s door. Curious I walked over to the door, making sure not to breathe in with my nose, and tried to open the door. It wouldn’t move, no matter how hard I pushed. I tried to talk through the door, but I got no response. I walked back upstairs and carefully surveyed the back yard. Seeing nothing I slowly went outside, and snuck to my parent’s window making as least amount of noise as possible. When I reached the window the first thing I noticed was that the window was shattered. How did I not hear that? The second thing was the blood stains. My eyes moved slowly as the scene as it turned from a mystery to a horror scene. Part of my parents were scattered across the room, with a giant plant laying on the bed. I just stood there with my mouth wide open, until it sensed me. It reached for me with it’s roots, but I was too fast. I just ran, and ran, and ran until I couldn't run anymore, then I ran some more. I tripped fell, and just layed there for a while, then decided to calm myself by writing this.
I climbed a tree as soon as I finished writing that and took a long nap. As soon as I woke up I put my watch on and was surprised to find that it was midnight. I heard the crack of a twig, and laid there paralyzed in the tree. Slowly I reached for my flashlight and clicked it on. Instantly relieved, I noticed that it was my dog, Joe. Wait. How did I forget about him too? I guess I was too scared to worry about anything else. I climbed down and decided to take a walk with Joe in tow.
I didn’t find anything until dawn. Once it was bright out it was a lot easier to see farther away than the occasional time in which I clicked on the flashlight. Once it was dawn I saw something that was catching the sun. I walked over to it, and found that it was a reasonably sized lake. After filling up an empty water bottle and letting Joe drink I looked to see if their were any lake houses around. To my relief there was one, but on the other side of the lake. Joe and I then began to walk over there.
It took a couple of hours, but we got there right as the sun was setting. I knocked on the door, and waited for a minute. When there was no response I knocked again and said that it was two travelers who needed a place to rest. After that an Old man greeted us and let us in. He told me that his name was George and that his wife was upstairs. He then asked what I was doing here. we sat down in the living room, and I told him what had happened. He was surprised to hear that there were the Fly Traps roaming around. It went kind of like this:
“Wait Walking, Giant Venus Fly Traps!?”
“Yup they've been around for a couple of months. How have you not heard about them yet?”
“Well my wife and I come down here for the summer every year, and we don’t use electricity here, except for heating, cooling , and lights, no T.V. or radio. But that went out yesterday. It happens so often that we didn’t really notice it, but maybe it’s something with the plants. I’m really sorry to hear about your folks, you are welcome to stay here as long as you want.”
“Thanks.” I replied and I turned to go upstairs.
As I lumbered up the creaking stairway I thought “Would I be here forever? Would the plants come and kill us? How long until I have to leave?” And I had a final thought as I slipped into the warm bed, “What would I have to do to survive this horrible nightmare like world?”
