The Fire At Hemlock Castle
By: Cassie
I wake to the pouncing of my cat on my bed. “Hello Sheila”, I tell her. I get out her favorite toy from my dresser for her to play with as I ring the bell for my maid to bring me breakfast. “I’m coming, I’m coming.” Says my maid outside the door. My maid sets the tray on the floor, a bead of sweat growing on her hairline. “Thank you.” I say. “You’re welcome your highness.” I eat in silence as I wait for the sun to come out from behind the clouds. When I finish I set the tray outside my bedroom door. I change from my nightgown to a green dress and brush my hair. I rush downstairs to greet my father.
“Hello daddy.” I say. “Hello pumpkin.” he says. I give my father a kiss on the cheek and run outside to the lawn for my archery lesson.
“You want to pull your bow back and then release.” says my archery instructor Aaron. “That makes a lot more sense.” I say. One hour is up so I greet Aaron goodbye and run inside. Where is everyone? I think to myself. I wander around the castle in search of anyone. I end up returning to my bedroom.
I find my cat curled upon her bed peacefully sleeping. I pull out a torn book from my dresser and start to read. A couple of hours have passed and I am awoken by the shrill of my maid screaming. “The castle is on fire, the castle is on fire!”. My body temperature rises, feeling like a ball of fire. I throw up the sash and immediately climb out of the window. I use the cracks in the wall to safely lower myself down. Surprisingly I end up not getting hurt.
I notice that no one is outside but me. I make the conclusion that they might be dead. I wait ten more minutes, no one is outside yet. I run to the stalls and tell the stall’s manager to go get help. One of the horses whines at me. By the time help arrives the flames have gotten even higher. “Please hurry!” I tell them as they run inside. When they come back they tell me the results. “We could not find anyone your highness.” They say. “There has to be someone alive in there.” I say. “We have already checked twice.” they say. Once the fire is put out I go inside and look at the remains. I end up going down to the wine cellar. All I see are barrels full of wine. Down here it is as quiet as a library. I hear the door click into place. I push on the door handle, nothing happens. My hands feel as cold as ice, my body shivers. I then realize that I am trapped.
